{"id":1077,"date":"2015-02-10T12:55:39","date_gmt":"2015-02-10T17:55:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pentecostalmusicians.com\/PMblog\/?p=1077"},"modified":"2015-02-10T12:55:39","modified_gmt":"2015-02-10T17:55:39","slug":"knowing-your-piano-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pentecostalmusicians.com\/PMblog\/?p=1077","title":{"rendered":"Knowing Your Piano Students!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>by Stephanie Clark<\/em><br \/>\nWhen I first started teaching piano, my two boys were automatically my new students\u2014most often taught against their will.\u00a0 At that time I taught all students pretty much the same way including my two boys<\/p>\n<p>My boys are very different from each other and so are all my other students&#8212;-even though everyone is different, I was teaching everyone the same way.<\/p>\n<p>Then I learned something that helped me tremendously, not only interacting with students but with people in general.\u00a0 Personality profiles or the \u201cfour temperament\u201d models of human behavior.\u00a0 Everyone has a <span style=\"color: #008080;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>different personality type<\/strong><\/span>,<\/span> children, musicians, co-workers, parents, everyone.\u00a0 It is important to note that one disposition is not better than the other\u2014just different.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>Outgoing:<\/strong><\/span> The individuals like to \u201cgo\u201d and are constantly on themove, create excitement and take the \u201cparty\u201d with them.\u00a0 They are fast-paced and energetic, usually positive and optimistic.\u00a0 They like to win and are involved in everything!\u00a0 They usually do not lack in self-confidence and sometimes bite off more than they can chew. But that\u2019s ok, they\u2019ll \u201chustle\u201d and make up the difference.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>Reserved:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0 These individuals are \u201csteady eddies\u201d and may be the proverbial tortoise left in the dust.\u00a0 They usually end up crossing the finish line ahead, however, because they have a lot of patience and stamina to get the job done.\u00a0 They are usually reserved types and cautious and reluctant to get involved in too many activities.\u00a0 They prefer, rather, to look into a situation a little longer than jumping right in.\u00a0 They look below the surface.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>Task oriented:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0 These individuals enjoy doing things, making plans, working on projects, and find great pleasure in a job well-done.\u00a0\u00a0 Sometimes they can be so focused on getting the job done that they can easily hurt someone\u2019s feelings.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>People oriented:<\/strong><\/span> These individuals like to interact with other people and they are more concerned with way people feel than simply accomplishing a task.<\/p>\n<p>If you are a beginning piano teacher, you\u2019ll find it helpful to <span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>KNOW YOUR STUDENTS!\u00a0<\/strong> <\/span>What do you want in a student?<\/p>\n<p>It is important to remember that all your students are going to be different!<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s an old saying<br \/>\nthe teacher has not taught anything until the student has heard.<\/p>\n<p>We hold the keys for our students\u2019 success<br \/>\nso wouldn\u2019t it make sense to adapt our teaching to their style?<\/p>\n<p>Knowing your student can help reduce turnover on your part and frustration on the student\u2019s part.<\/p>\n<p>Do they have a piano or keyboard?\u00a0 This is very important!
