font-family: book antiqua,palatino,serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I like to teach \u201cmemory tricks\u201d when I\u2019m teaching chords and chord progressions!\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Because if the student memorizes the \u201ctrick\u201d or \u201cshort cut\u201d they can INSTANTLY play the chord when they see it on a chord sheet!\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 107%; font-family: book antiqua,palatino,serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I\u2019ve been asked <em>\u201cdoesn\u2019t that affect the students desire or ability\u00a0to learn music theory?\u201d\u00a0<\/em> <strong>Absolutely not!<\/strong>\u00a0 If a student has a desire to learn music theory\u2014they will take the necessary classes and investigate the necessary documents to learn the \u201cwhys\u201d and \u201cwherefores\u201d of the underlying theory.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 107%; font-family: book antiqua,palatino,serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Let\u2019s be honest, many people who play \u201cby ear\u201d or \u201cby chords\u201d have no desire to learn music theory\u2014which I find disappointing\u2014but it\u2019s their choice.\u00a0 I would rather teach a student a \u201ctrick\u201d or \u201cshort cut\u201d which will allow them to use better chords and better chord progressions rather than\u00a0listen to them play just the triads and\u00a0basic chord changes within a key signature.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Garamond',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: book antiqua,palatino,serif;\">If you are an individual who wants to learn the theory and what makes music \u201ctick\u201d go for it!\u00a0 It\u2019s great!\u00a0\u00a0 If you play by ear or chords and just want to play well but not delve into the mechanics of music theory, then learn the \u201ctricks\u201d and \u201cshort cuts\u201d so you can play well <strong>NOW<\/strong>.\u00a0 Perhaps one of these days something will click in your brain and you\u2019ll want to know the WHY as well as the HOW.\u00a0 In addition, using the \u201ctricks\u201d and \u201cshort cuts\u201d allows you to memorize chords and progressions without having to sit and calculate the formulas as you play!\u00a0<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Pamela Rentzel I like to teach \u201cmemory tricks\u201d when I\u2019m teaching chords and chord progressions!\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Because if the student memorizes the \u201ctrick\u201d or \u201cshort cut\u201d they can INSTANTLY play the chord when they see it on a chord sheet!\u00a0 I\u2019ve been asked \u201cdoesn\u2019t that affect the students desire or ability\u00a0to learn music theory?\u201d\u00a0 &hellip;
