{"id":1776,"date":"2018-03-08T10:17:35","date_gmt":"2018-03-08T15:17:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pentecostalmusicians.com\/PMblog\/?p=1776"},"modified":"2018-03-08T10:17:35","modified_gmt":"2018-03-08T15:17:35","slug":"relative-pitch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pentecostalmusicians.com\/PMblog\/?p=1776","title":{"rendered":"Relative Pitch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>by Pamela Rentzel<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Many people think it\u2019s a GREAT mystery or a GIFT to play an instrument by EAR!&nbsp; Not so!&nbsp; You can learn to play or sing by ear but just <strong><u>learning to listen!<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So, my CHALLENGE to you in 2018, is to start a plan that will help you HEAR intervals!&nbsp; It\u2019s one of the BEST things you can do when learning to play the keyboard, sing parts or play any other instrument for a Pentecostal church service!<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Let\u2019s talk about the INTERVALS!&nbsp; An Interval is the distance between notes!<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the Key of C:&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><u>C to D &#8211; Major 2<sup>nd<\/sup><\/u><\/strong> \u2013 up one whole step \u2013 sounds like \u201cat the cross, at the cross.\u201d or \u201cto be like Jesus\u201d (1, 2, 3, 4..)<\/li>\n<li><strong><u>C to E &#8211; Major 3rd<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 \u201csweet hour of prayer<br \/>\n\u201d or \u201cjust as I am\u201d<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Sometimes the 1 (one) can be just an \u201cunderstood\u201d interval without using the 1 \u2013 starting on the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> \u2013 \u201cin the name of Jesus, (we have the victory).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong><u>C to F &#8211; Perfect 4th<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 \u201cstand up, stand up for Jesus\u201d or \u201cHere comes the bride.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong><u>C to G &#8211; Perfect 5th<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 \u201cthere is a fountain.\u201d\n<ol>\n<li>Again the 1 (one) can be \u201cunderstood\u201d without being used; example is: \u201cI\u2019ll fly away, oh glory, I\u2019ll fly<br \/>\n\u201d or \u201cHe touched me\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong><u>C to A &#8211; Major 6th<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 \u201cmy Bonnie lies over the ocean\u201d or \u201cI see a crimson stream of blood\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong><u>C to B &#8211; Major 7th<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 half step below octave<\/li>\n<li><strong><u>C to C &#8211; Perfect 8th<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 octave<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pentecostalmusicians.com\/PMblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/C-Scale-561X345.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"561\" height=\"345\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1777 size-full\" alt=\"C Scale 561X345\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pentecostalmusicians.com\/PMblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/C-Scale-561X345.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pentecostalmusicians.com\/PMblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/C-Scale-561X345.png 561w, https:\/\/www.pentecostalmusicians.com\/PMblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/C-Scale-561X345-300x184.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 561px) 100vw, 561px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>How to Practice!<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Sing each INTERVAL with your voice and play it on your instrument.<\/li>\n<li>Listen and memorize the relationship in the SOUND distance between the two tones.<\/li>\n<li>Feel the INTERVAL (distance) beneath your hand.<\/li>\n<li>Test yourself to see the progress you are making! (Remember to shuffle them up so you are not just memorizing them in order!)<\/li>\n<li>Continue to work on all the INTERVALS in other keys.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Identifying these intervals will not happen overnight!<\/strong>&nbsp; It\u2019s a <strong>PROCESS <\/strong>which requires being consistent in working on them.<\/p>\n<p>Listen and become aware of melodies and INTERVALS in the music you hear on the radio, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Next, work on the <strong><u>half-step intervals<\/u><\/strong> starting with the 1<sup>st<\/sup> to MINOR 3<sup>rd<\/sup> as this interval is vital in good musicianship.<\/p>\n<p>I have found a very good app for helping you through the process.
